Square Kitchen Display System is a modern, intuitive interface for restaurant staff to manage orders, track inventory, and communicate with the front of house. At the core of the system is a kitchen ticket, or chit, that displays key order details and actions for quick and efficient order fulfillment.

The core of the Kitchen Display System is the kitchen ticket, or chit, that displays key order details and actions for quick and efficient order fulfillment.

The Kitchen Display System needed to be flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of restaurant workflows and ticket complexities. I designed a flexible system that could be customized to fit different needs both ahead of service and during high-pressure moments.

For busy, full service restaurants, Square KDS became a sidekick for expeditors who need quick access to order details, actions, and real-time status updates from other parts of the kitchen.

To help kitchens transition to the KDS, I spent time in kitchens to understand how staff worked with paper tickets. Being able to organize tickets by station, and effortlessly rearrange tickets, were two features that we designed to help with the transition.

No two kitchens are the same, so we designed simple settings that allowed kitchens to customize the KDS to their needs.

To help solve for displays being placed in various parts of a kitchen, each display could have custom type sizes, colors, and layouts.

Knowing if a dish needs to be prepared for delivery or dine-in needs to be quick and easy. Custom colors could be used to make this distinction clear, even from a distance.
